Fresh off his European tour and returning home from an academic sabbatical in Hamburg, South African double bassist, composer, bandleader, producer and musical director Vimbs Mavimbs (Thembinkosi Mavimbela) returns to Untitled Basement for a special live presentation of Late Bloomer, his highly anticipated body of work.

Released earlier this year, Late Bloomer is a deeply personal and expansive reflection on the unfolding nature of an artistic journey. It explores the idea that growth does not happen according to a fixed timeline, and that arriving later does not mean arriving late. Drawing on nearly two decades of listening, learning, collaboration and artistic exploration, the work captures a musician continually discovering new language within his craft.

Mavimbs journey into music began at the Welcome Soweto School of Music (WESSOM) in Pimville, Soweto, where he received early guidance from mentors including Leon Bosch and Lex Futshane. He went on to study composition and performance at the University of the Witwatersrand, while further developing his musicianship through programmes such as the MIAGI Youth Orchestra camps and the National Youth Jazz Festival. Today, he is pursuing a Master s in Jazz in Hamburg, Germany, continuing a remarkable journey from community music spaces in Soweto to stages and collaborations at home and abroad.

For one night only, Late Bloomer will be presented in a new light. This marks the first live presentation of the body of work on home soil since its release, offering audiences an opportunity to experience the music through the lens of Mavimbs recent experiences in Europe and his return home.

More than an album presentation, this is a return to the music, people and places that have shaped his artistic journey. It is a celebration of community, patience and the unhurried harvest of an artist coming fully into his own.
