The Sankayi Jazz Series is honoured to welcome The Hugh Masekela Band - the legendary musicians who shared the stage with Bra Hugh during the final fifteen years of his extraordinary career.
Together, they performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals, from Carnegie Hall to the North Sea Jazz Festival, while taking South African music to audiences across Africa, Europe and the United States. They also performed at the inauguration of Ghana's president, carrying Hugh Masekela's unmistakable sound to some of the most significant stages of his generation.
Since Hugh Masekela's passing in 2018, the band has continued to celebrate his remarkable musical legacy through performances across South Africa and beyond. Their appearances include the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, HughFest, Lesotho's Letofe Festival, and commemorative concerts presented in partnership with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation, ensuring that the music and spirit of Bra Hugh continue to inspire new generations.
This is far more than a tribute concert. These are the musicians who lived the music night after night, on stages around the world. From the joyous energy of Grazing in the Grass to the profound storytelling of Stimela, they bring the music to life with the authenticity, warmth and spirit that made Hugh Masekela one of South Africa's greatest musical ambassadors.
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating the life, music and enduring legacy of Bra Hugh.
Guests are encouraged to arrive from 18:00 to choose their preferred seating and enjoy dinner and drinks before the performance. Seating is allocated on a first come, first served basis.
For an uninterrupted listening experience, the kitchen closes 30 minutes before the performance and reopens during the interval.
