About

Nadwa x Lit.Culture x Breezeblock presents the state we made: what other worlds are possible?

If you've been looking for a place for deeper conversations in Johannesburg, we'd love to welcome you to an evening imagining different worlds. We ve realised that the room changes when everyone can be seen, heard, and invited into the conversation. Once a month, we gather in Johannesburg for an evening conversation with someone whose work helps us understand the world and ourselves a little bit better. Each gathering begins with a question and unfolds through stories, ideas and an open conversation with the room.

The world we live in can sometimes feel like the only world there is. We inherit national identities, learn where we belong and come to accept certain ways of organising our lives as simply the way things are. But these worlds were made by people. They emerged from particular histories, ideas and struggles, and they could have taken other forms. What if we gave ourselves permission to imagine otherwise?

For our fifth gathering, we ll be asking another enduring human question: what if the world we live in isn't the only world we could have made.

Equity specialist, Dr Athinangamso Nkopo will guide a conversation on the world we ve inherited and the worlds we might yet create. Taking the state and the nation as our starting points, we ll explore how the systems around us shape our ideas of identity, belonging and freedom, and ask what else might be possible if we began to see them differently. Together, we ll let our imaginations wander beyond the familiar. What would we keep about the world we ve made? What would we change? What might belonging look like if we imagined it anew? And what kinds of lives could we make possible for one another if we dared to think beyond the way things are? The conversation with our thinker will be followed by an open conversation where we can think aloud, share perspectives and imagine together what other worlds might be possible.
